Profile – CATHERINE ZIMDAHL (Writer, Artist, Truant)

As a writer for performance I have had scripts produced around Australia and internationally. Awards include Griffin Playwriting Award, Victorian Premier’s Literary Award, New Dramatists Exchange and AACTA Awards for Best Short Film and Best Screenplay. I studied screenwriting at the Australian, Film, Television and Radio School and was the recipient of the Qantas Travel Award graduate prize. Please see “Plays” and “Film Scripts” index icons for up to date list of works. I am a member of 7-ON PLAYWRIGHTS, in 2012 “No Nudity, Weapons or Naked Flames” a book of monologues was published by Federation Press, which includes three monos by each 7.

Of late I have been dovetailing my writing and art in creating a graphic novella “My Charitable Works” – a project that will work as the basis for a performance text and will also have both an online life and paper version artifact.

Most recently I had a large solo exhibition in June 2011, SENSORIUM (on the internal combustion of the senses) at the Chrissie Cotter Gallery, selected and supported by the Marrickville Council. In October 2011 MALTHUSIAN CHEQUE was chosen for inclusion in the Unfolding Exhibition group show at ATVP 4.5. At the end of 2011 several paintings were accepted in the curated 2011 Artsite Christmas Salon with a series of drawings concurrently included in the GIFTED show at Kaleidoscope Gallery. In 2012 smaller paintings were exhibited at Platform72 Gallery/Design Store. At the beginning of September 2012 two works were selected for the curated exhibition the “Great Unknown” – Un(der)Represented Artists Exhibition at Artsite Gallery (Official Sydney Fringe Festival.) In previous years I have exhibited in a number of group shows and had my first solo exhibition at Sidetrack Theatre as part of the Newtown Artspace Program and Marrickville Council. When I did attempt formal art study it was at the National Art School (Foundation Year). I am currently immersed in a new series of paintings called RESOLUTION: SUBLIMATE and a set of assembleges/sculptures titled THE SHIRTS OFF OUR BACKS.

And as for Truancy - I have always had truant tendencies especially when I HAVE to create, which is most of the time. A whole gallery will be devoted to my life’ pursuit……eventually.
